What is TIN?
As an individual or business names may not be especially unique, this method uniquely identifies each taxpayers by assigning a unique number to each taxpayer (business and individuals).
The TIN should have the following characteristics:
A simple sequential number
Number sequence is as short as possible –no more than 10 digits.
Contain alphabetic or special characters
Contain embedded characteristics or meaning.
Have a modulus-11-check digit to minimize errors, and
Issued once and forever to at taxpayers-never re-issued.
This new systems allows us to better manage the administration of our taxpayers, including the provision of taxpayers’ services, processing of returns and payments, ensuring compliance, selective taxpayer audit and case management.
When to use your TIN?
• TIN is required for clearing goods at the Port and Border Customs Posts and for securing a Tax Clearance Certificate.
• A TIN Registration Certificate will be required from taxpayers in the future for banking transactions and involvements of financial nature with government ministries, department and agencies.
