In a significant move to enhance trade facilitation, revenue collection, and border security, Sierra Leone's National Revenue Authority (NRA) has officially broken ground on the construction of a state-of-the-art Customs Border Control and Management facility at the Jendema border point with Liberia.
Commissioner General Mrs. Jeneba J. Bangura remarked, “Once completed, this new facility will serve as a critical hub for streamlining cross-border trade, improving the efficiency of customs operations, and strengthening cooperation between Sierra Leone and Liberia. This project reflects the government’s firm commitment to modernizing our revenue collection infrastructure and promoting sustainable economic growth.”
"The decision to undertake this project has been significantly informed by the expansion of business activities and broadening of revenue base along the Liberia border", the Commissioner General further explained.
The facility will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and infrastructure, including:
1. Digital tax administration systems, such as ASYCUDA WORLD, enable seamless data management.
2. Real-time monitoring capabilities for border activities.
3. Improved office space for customs officials and other stakeholders.
By reducing clearance times and streamlining procedures, the facility is expected to boost trade volumes and economic activity between Sierra Leone and Liberia, positively impacting the wider Mano River region. Furthermore, it will enable the NRA to better track and collect revenue, directly contributing to the nation’s economic development.
The project which is solely funded by NRA is anticipated to be completed within three months, marking a major milestone in the country's efforts to modernize its border infrastructure.
